Lukwati & Piti Game Reserves
An expectional Buffalo Area in Western Tanzania
Encompassing half a million acres of miombo woodland habitat, this area is interspersed with flood plains & rugged rocky outcrops. It comprises of mountainous terrain that is well-watered by numerous springs and small rivers, both seasonal and permanent. It borders the Rungwa River in the north, a stream called Mwipa to the East and another seasonal stream - Makambe to the west.
Food plains, rocky outcrops, mountain ranges and numerous smaller rivers – both seasonal and permanentm make this area unique. It is an extremely well-watered area, which allows for large herds of buffalo, resident all year round, with even greater numbers migrating into the area during the peak of the dry season. Due to the high buffalo numbers in the area, there is also an exceptionally large lion population.
The area is also home to good populations of Leopard, Sable, Roan, Greater Kudu, Eland, Lichtenstein’s Hartebeest, Oribi, Klipspringer, Bushbuck, Zebra, and Duiker. Hippos and Crocodile also inhabit the waterways of this beautifully wilderness area.
